아시아태평양 문화센터(APCC,이사장 서인석)는 제1회 영어 시조 공모전의 수상작을 선정하고 지난 23일에 한국 추석 축제에서 시상식과 수상 작품 낭독회를 개최했다.
이번 공모전은 미국의 미래세대에게 한국의 전통 시조를 소개하고 직접 표현해 봄으로써 K-문화가 미국 사회에 긍정적으로 뿌리내릴 수 있는 씨앗을 심기 위해 마련됐다.
1학년부터 12학년까지 학생들을 대상으로 한 이번 공모전에는 총 46편의 작품이 접수됐다.
심사 결과, 워싱턴주 주지사상인 대상은 7학년 Elena Buitrago 학생의 ‘Flowers’가 차지했다. 대상 수상작은 “꽃들(Flowers)은 봄이 오면 피어나고/ 세상을 아름답게 물들인다./ 나는 그 꽃들처럼/ 내 꿈을 이루고 싶다”는 내용을 담고 있다.
이외에도 장려상 2편, 입선 3편이 선정됐다.
심사위원장을 맡은 김성교 시인은 “영어 시조는 우리말의 음절과 영어의 음절이 다르기 때문에 심사에 어려움이 많았다”며 “그럼에도 불구하고 정형율을 지키면서도 수준 높은 작품들이 많아 기뻤다”고 말했다.
또한 김 위원장은 “이번 공모전은 미국에서 처음으로 열린 영어 시조 공모전이었다. 아무런 관계 자료도 없어 시행착오가 많았지만, 참가자들의 열정적인 응모에 보답하고자 최선을 다했다.
수상작들은 정형율을 지키면서도 한국의 전통 시조의 정신을 잘 살려낸 작품들이었다. 앞으로도 아태문화센터는 다양한 문화 행사를 통해 한국의 문화를 미국 사회에 널리 알릴 계획이다.”고 덧붙혔다.
수상작 6편은 한국의 문예지인 문학시선 가을호에 실려 국립도서관 등에 기록소장되게 된다.
